Here are a few of my favorite online findsโ€ฆ

“How can I know with certainty what the Bible is saying? How can I be certain what books really belong in the Bible? How can I be sure that my interpretation of any text is correct, and, still more, what its proper application is…?” Have you ever tried to explain a biblical principle to someone only to hear the retort, “But Thatโ€™s Just Your Interpretation!“?ย D.A. Carson has some helpful words for us in the latest issue of Themelios.

“Pastors, I have a plea for you. Please, love your women enough to warn them against false teachers. It isnโ€™t enough to simply teach the good stuff; if they donโ€™t know what is out there that is not good and why it isnโ€™t good? They will continue to fall for it.”ย Check outย Amy Spreeman’sย article,ย When Seemingly Solid Pastors Fail to Protect Women.

“Christianity is sexist!” “The Bible is patriarchal and just wants to keep women down!” We hear these tired arguments trotted out again and again, but are they really true? No, Eric Davis explains in his excellent article over at Cripplegate, 10 Reasons Why the Bible Regards Women Higher than All Other Systems, “The fact is…the Bible regards women higher than any other ideology, religion, philosophy, or system in history. Nothing teaches a higher view of women than biblical Christianity.”

Crossway has an interesting infographic for us on a study they conducted on prayer: “Over 14,000 people recently shared about various aspects of their prayer lives with us…we invite you to dig into the data, looking at established prayer habits, common pain points, and useful practices and tools for prayer.” Take a look at Infographic: How Is Your Prayer Life?.

Hermeneutics is the lens through which we view Scripture. Dr. Dane Ortlund helpfully explains some right and wrong lenses to use when studying Scripture in 6 Ways Not to Read the Bible (a brief excerpt from a longer seminar). Are you handling Scripture correctly?

  1. Hi, Michelle! Regarding, Dane Ortlund, do you have any more information on him? I saw a critique of his book Gentle and Lowly by Marcia Montenegro, and another article by Grace to You- relating to him speaking wrongly about Jesus. I definitely understand not supporting everything on a website or what an author has said. And if you’ve covered this already, I apologize. At what point do we stop recommending someone? Trying to figure that out regarding Dane Ortlund.

Thank you for all you do!

    1. Hi T.R.- I’m afraid I don’t. I recall the article on GTY (which I believe was later removed?), but haven’t seen the one by Marcia. I know there are some theological issues with his brother Gavin and his father Ray. If memory serves, they have both begun leaning a bit more progressive/liberal. One of them even suggested voting for Harris in the 2024 election. I have no idea whether or not Dane has joined them in those beliefs, but I would suggest looking into it.

Keeping in mind that there’s a significant difference between “stop recommending” and “warning against” someone, or labeling that person as a false teacher, that is totally up to you. You don’t have to recommend anyone at all, ever. And if you are recommending someone, you can stop anywhere along the way for any reason. What you can’t do is warn against someone or call someone a false teacher without sufficient biblical grounds for doing so. Next week’s episode (Glad You Asked) of A Word Fitly Spoken will touch on this question, and, I haven’t finished writing it yet, so I’m not positive, but this week’s “The Mailbag” article here on the blog will probably touch on this question as well.

      1. Ok, thank you so much!

I was asked about him, and I did find both Grace to You, the article is still up, and Marcia’s review. If interested, https://www.christiananswersnewage.com/article/ruminations-on-dane-ortlund-s-gentle-and-lowly?

That’s a good clarification- there’s a difference between not recommending someone, I like how you have worded it, there’s just better teachers out there, and an actual false teacher.

I look forward to the podcast! What wonderful timing ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š It is important to lay out the groundwork of what does the Bible say. So, so needed!

Thank you so much for the response, much appreciated! God bless you and strengthen you in His word ๐Ÿ™

Edited to add: Yeah, that Mailbag article isn’t coming this week. I forgot about something else I need to post instead.
