Wednesday’s Word ~ 2 Corinthians 4

2 cor 4 6

2 Corinthians 4

Therefore, havingย this ministryย by the mercy of God,ย we do not lose heart.ย 2ย But we have renouncedย disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practiceย cunning orย to tamper with God’s word, butย by the open statement of the truthย we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.ย 3ย And evenย if our gospel is veiled,ย it is veiled toย those who are perishing.ย 4ย In their caseย the god of this worldย has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeingย the light ofย the gospel of the glory of Christ,ย who is the image of God.ย 5ย For whatย we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, withย ourselves as your servantsย for Jesus’ sake.ย 6ย For God, who said,ย โ€œLet light shine out of darkness,โ€ย has shone in our hearts to giveย the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

7ย But we have this treasure inย jars of clay,ย to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.ย 8ย We areย afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;ย 9ย persecuted, butย not forsaken;ย struck down, but not destroyed;ย 10ย always carrying in the body the death of Jesus,ย so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.ย 11ย For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.ย 12ย Soย death is at work in us, but life in you.

13ย Since we haveย the same spirit of faith according to what has been written,ย โ€œI believed, and so I spoke,โ€ we also believe, and so we also speak,ย 14ย knowing thatย he who raised the Lord Jesusย will raise us also with Jesus andย bring us with you into his presence.ย 15ย Forย it is all for your sake, so that asย grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving,ย to the glory of God.

16ย So we do not lose heart.ย Though our outer selfย is wasting away,ย our inner selfย is being renewed day by day.ย 17ย Forย this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,ย 18ย as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Questions to Consider:

1. Identify the antecedents of the pronouns in this chapter. Who is “we“? Who is “they”? (3)

2. What does it mean that the gospel is “veiled”? To whom is it veiled and why? (3-4) How could God save these people if the gospel is veiled?

3. What are the two instances or events of light shining in darkness which Paul is comparing in verse 6?

4. In verse 7, what is the “treasure”? What are the “jars of clay”?

5. What does Paul say is the purpose (15) of the persecution and suffering he mentions in verses 8-9? Why do they “not lose heart”? (16-18)

Wednesday’s Word ~ Romans 5

ro 5 8

Romans 5

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,ย weย have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.ย 2ย Through him we have alsoย obtained access by faithย into this graceย in which we stand, andย weย rejoiceย in hope of the glory of God.ย 3ย Not only that, but weย rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that sufferingย produces endurance,ย 4ย and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,ย 5ย andย hope does not put us to shame, because God’s loveย has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

6ย Forย while we were still weak, at the right timeย Christ died for the ungodly.ย 7ย For one will scarcely die for a righteous personโ€”though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to dieโ€”ย 8ย butย God shows his love for us in thatย while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.ย 9ย Since, therefore,ย we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him fromย the wrath of God.ย 10ย For ifย while we were enemiesย we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved byย his life.ย 11ย More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now receivedย reconciliation.

12ย Therefore, just asย sin came into the world through one man, andย death through sin, andย so death spread to all menย becauseย all sinnedโ€”ย 13ย for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, butย sin is not counted where there is no law.ย 14ย Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was notย like the transgression of Adam,ย who was a type ofย the one who was to come.

15ย But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded forย many.16ย And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. Forย the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses broughtย justification.ย 17ย For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousnessย reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18ย Therefore, as one trespassย led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousnessย leads to justification and life forย all men.ย 19ย For as by the one man’sย disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’sย obedience the many will be made righteous.ย 20ย Nowย the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased,ย grace abounded all the more,ย 21ย so that,ย as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Questions to Consider:

1. To whom is Paul speaking in this chapter? Christians? Non-Christians?

2. According to verses 3-5, for what reasons should we rejoice in times of suffering?

3. What kind of people did Christ die for? (6-8) What do these verses say to the person who thinks she has to get her life cleaned up before coming to Christ? Would you be willing to die for a good person? What about someone who has sinned against you as much as you have sinned against Christ?

4. Verse 12 says that sin entered into the world through one man. Who was that one man, and how did he cause sin to enter the world?

5. This chapter talks a lot about justification and reconciliation. Re-read the verses that mention these words. What does it mean to be justified before God? What does it mean to be reconciled to God? Whose actions justify and reconcile us, and what were those actions?

John 14

Let not your hearts be troubled.ย Believe in God;ย believe also in me.ย 2ย Inย my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you thatย I go to prepare a place for you?ย 3ย And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take youย to myself, thatย where I am you may be also.ย 4ย And you know the way to where I am going.โ€ย 5ย Thomas said to him, โ€œLord,ย we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?โ€ย 6ย Jesus said to him,ย โ€œI amย the way, andย the truth, andย the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.ย 7ย If you had known me, you would haveย known my Father also.ย From now on you do know him andย have seen him.โ€

8ย Philip said to him, โ€œLord,ย show us the Father, and it is enough for us.โ€ย 9ย Jesus said to him,ย โ€œHave I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip?ย Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, โ€˜Show us the Fatherโ€™?ย 10ย Do you not believe thatย I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to youย I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.ย 11ย Believe me thatย I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or elseย believe on account of the works themselves.

12ย โ€œTruly, truly, I say to you,ย whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because Iย am going to the Father.ย 13ย Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, thatย the Father may be glorified in the Son.ย 14ย If you ask meย anything in my name, I will do it.

15ย โ€œIf you love me, you willย keep my commandments.ย 16ย And I will ask the Father, and he will give you anotherย Helper,ย to be with you forever,ย 17ย evenย the Spirit of truth,ย whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you andย will beย in you.

18ย โ€œI will not leave you as orphans;ย I will come to you.ย 19ย Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, butย you will see me.ย Because I live, you also will live.ย 20ย In that day you will know thatย I am in my Father, andย you in me, andย I in you.ย 21ย Whoever has my commandments andย keeps them, he it is who loves me. Andย he who loves meย will be loved by my Father, and I will love him andย manifest myself to him.โ€ย 22ย Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, โ€œLord, how is itย that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?โ€ย 23ย Jesus answered him,ย โ€œIf anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, andย we will come to him andย make our home with him.ย 24ย Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. Andย the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25ย โ€œThese things I have spoken to you while I am still with you.ย 26ย But theย Helper, the Holy Spirit,ย whom the Father will send in my name,ย he will teach you all things andย bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.ย 27ย Peace I leave with you;ย my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.ย Let not your hearts be troubled, neitherย let them be afraid.ย 28ย You heard me say to you,ย โ€˜I am going away, and I will come to you.โ€™ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because Iย am going to the Father, forย the Father is greater than I.ย 29ย Andย now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.ย 30ย I will no longer talk much with you, forย the ruler of this world is coming.ย He has no claim on me,ย 31ย but I doย as the Father has commanded me,ย so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

Questions to Consider:

1. Who is speaking, and who is being spoken to in this chapter?

2. What does it mean that “no one comes to the Father except through” Jesus? (verse 6) What does this mean for followers of religions which exclude Jesus or do not have a correct, biblical understanding of who Jesus is?

3. Some people say that Jesus was only a man and never claimed to be God. Does this chapter support or refute this idea? Which verses would back up your answer?

4. Does verse 14 mean that God will give you anything you ask for in prayer as long as you say the phrase “in Jesus’ name” when you ask for it? What does it mean to ask for something in Jesus’ name?

5. According to verses 15, 21, 23, and 24, what is the evidence that someone truly loves Christ as she claims to?

Wednesday’s Word ~ 1 Corinthians 16

1 Corinthians 16

Now concerningย the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do.ย 2ย Onย the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up,ย as he may prosper,ย so that there will be no collecting when I come.ย 3ย And when I arrive, I will sendย those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem.ย 4ย If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me.

5ย I will visit you after passing throughย Macedonia, forย I intend to pass through Macedonia,ย 6ย and perhaps I will stay with you or even spend the winter, so that you mayย help me on my journey, wherever I go.7ย For I do not want to see you nowย just in passing. I hope to spend some time with you,ย if the Lord permits.ย 8ย But I will stay in Ephesus untilย Pentecost,ย 9ย forย a wide door for effective work has opened to me, andย there are many adversaries.

10ย When Timothy comes, see that you put him at ease among you, forย he is doingย the work of the Lord, as I am.ย 11ย Soย let no one despise him.ย Help him on his wayย in peace, that he may return to me, for I am expecting him with the brothers.

12ย Now concerningย our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to visit you with the other brothers, but it was not at all his willย to come now. He will come when he has opportunity.

13ย Be watchful,ย stand firm in the faith,ย act like men,ย be strong.ย 14ย Let all that you do be done in love.

15ย Now I urge you, brothersโ€”you know thatย the householdย of Stephanas wereย the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselvesย to the service of the saintsโ€”ย 16ย be subject to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer.ย 17ย I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up forย your absence,ย 18ย for theyย refreshed my spirit as well as yours.ย Give recognition to such people.

19ย The churches of Asia send you greetings.ย Aquila and Prisca, together withย the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord.ย 20ย All the brothers send you greetings.ย Greet one another with a holy kiss.

21ย I, Paul, writeย this greeting with my own hand.ย 22ย If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him beย accursed. Our Lord, come!ย 23ย The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.ย 24ย My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Questions to Consider:

1. What is Paul’s goal in writing this chapter?

2. What can we learn about giving and collecting offerings from verses 1-3?

3. What example can we take from verses 10-11 about how we should treat our pastors?

4. What five things does Paul tell the men of the church to do in verses 13-14? Think of one way you could carry out each of these instructions in your church.

5. In verse 20, Paul instructs the members to “greet one another with a holy kiss,” a culturally appropriate sign of respect and affection at the time. Why is it important to have and show respect and affection for our church family?

2 Peter 3

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, โ€œWhere is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.โ€ 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Questions to Consider

1. What is the purpose of the book of 2 Peter? Which genre(s) of biblical literature (prophecy, epistle, narrative, wisdom, etc.) is the book of 2 Peter? What is the historical backdrop for this book?

2. Read verse 1, noticing the words โ€œbelovedโ€ and โ€œsincere mindโ€. What do these words tell you about how Peter regarded his audience as opposed toโ€ฆsayโ€ฆhow Paul regarded the Galatian Christians?

3. Compare verses 1-3 with Jude 17-19. What does it mean for someone to be a โ€œscofferโ€? What are the scoffers scoffing about? (4-7) What does it mean that they โ€œdeliberately overlookโ€ the facts Peter lays out in 5-7? Explain why, in order for a scoffer to hold an anti-biblical view (evolution, abortion, egalitarianism, sexual perversion, etc.), she must first โ€œdeliberately overlookโ€ biblical facts or โ€œsuppress the truth in unrighteousness.โ€

4. Read verses 8, 9, and 15a together. Compare and contrast our impatience for the Lordโ€™s return with His patience toward the world. Why is the Lord taking so long โ€“ from our perspective โ€“ to come back?

5. Examine verses 11-18. โ€œWhat sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godlinessโ€ considering that Christ could return at any moment? Make a list of the instructions Peter gives us for the way we should live as we await the Lordโ€™s return:
