SCOTUS to Rule on Same Sex “Marriage”: A Call to Prayer and Godly Response

Tomorrow, Wednesday, June 26, the Supreme Court is expected to rule on two cases related to same sex โ€œmarriageโ€ (SSM): Hollingsworth v. Perry, which seeks to overturn Proposition 8, Californiaโ€™s current ban on same sex โ€œmarriage,โ€ and United States v. Windsor, which challenges the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Iโ€™d like to ask you, my readers, to pray for Godโ€™s mercy as the United States faces these decisions tomorrow. May He be merciful by allowing all bans on same sex โ€œmarriageโ€ to stand:

For His people:
Ever since same sex โ€œmarriageโ€ became a hot button issue, and despite the claims of the homosexual lobby that legalizing it wonโ€™t harm Bible-believing Christians, there have been numerous cases of Christian bakers, photographers, florists, and even churches who have been sued because they cannot, in good conscience, tacitly endorse same sex โ€œmarriageโ€ by providing their services at such weddings.

If the Supreme Court rules in favor of SSM, these cases will increase and expand in scope and will affect far more individuals, churches, and Christian-owned businesses. ย Please pray that God will show mercy to His people and protect their businesses and churches.

For homosexuals:
God established the concept and practice of government for our own good (Romans 13:1). Without law and order, anarchy would reign. Any current local, state, or federal law against same sex โ€œmarriageโ€ is a gift from God to those caught in the sin of homosexuality. Just as a fence around a yard is designed to keep children from wandering away, the boundary of the laws against SSM is one of Godโ€™s ways of protecting people from their own sin. If they wonโ€™t listen to Him, perhaps they will bounce off the brick wall of the law and turn back to Him.

But if SSM is ruled in favor of ย tomorrow, that boundary will be removed, and, as Christians, that should grieve us for our homosexual friends and loved ones. Although God has always done so on an individual basis, we will begin to see what it looks like for God to โ€œgive them upโ€ to their sin on a corporate level.

Claiming to be wise, they became fools,ย andย exchanged the glory ofย the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

Thereforeย God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, toย the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,ย because they exchanged the truth about God forย a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator,ย who is blessed forever! Amen.

For this reasonย God gave them up toย dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;ย and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another,ย men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God,ย God gave them up toย a debased mind to doย what ought not to be done.ย They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips,ย slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents,ย foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.ย Though they knowย God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them butย give approval to those who practice them.

Romans 1:22-32

The legalization of SSM will be tragic for homosexuals because it will bolster their rebellion against God and separate them from Him even further by encouraging them to stay in, celebrate, and flaunt their sin. I canโ€™t tell you how many times I have thanked God for protecting me from myself and my own sinful desires. I am praying that God will protect the homosexual community in the same way, and I ask you to join me.

What if God says โ€œnoโ€?
What if, in His wisdom and timing, God chooses to allow the Supreme Court to legalize SSM tomorrow? What is to be the Christian response?

Will we grieve for our homosexual friends and loved ones? Our country? Ourselves? Yes.

Should we act out and speak out in vitriolic anger and bitterness? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

Our battle is not against people whom God loves and desires to rescue. Our battle is against Satan, who is holding those precious people as his captives and slaves to sin.

And how do we battle him?

With the gospel.

The good news of Jesus Christ –that He took the punishment ALL of us deserve for ALL of our sin– still has the power to save anyone, homosexual, heterosexual, or otherwise, who will repent and trust in His death, burial, and resurrection to save him.

What if God says โ€œyesโ€?
What if, in His wisdom and timing, God chooses to protect the bans on same sex โ€œmarriageโ€? How should Christians respond?

In humility and gratitude in our hearts to God, and with the gospel.

There could hardly be a less Christlike response on the part of those who claim to be His than to boast and gloat in a snotty โ€œWe won! We won!โ€ sort of attitude. Are you kidding me? We didnโ€™t โ€œwinโ€ anything. A court decision doesnโ€™t change anybodyโ€™s heart. The same people who were lost and on their way to hell today will still be lost and on their way to hell tomorrow unless we share the gospel with them and God saves them.

At the end of the day, itโ€™s not about rights or legislation or which side won or lost. Itโ€™s about a King who hung on a cross so that His subjects, held as prisoners of war, could be set free.

Remember that with me, and letโ€™s pray.

The Way We Wor (ship)

mt_sinai

And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying, โ€˜Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it.ย Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death.ย ย No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot;ย whether beast or man, he shall not live.โ€™ Whenย the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.โ€
Exodus 19:12-13

From Cain and Abel to the Israelites in the wilderness to Ananias and Sapphira, God sets limits on the way we may approach Him. He has always said “whosoever will” may come to Him, but He is just as exacting about theย way in which we come to Him today as He was back then.

It’s no small matter that many people in the Bible were put to death for approaching God in anything less than an attitude of utmost awe, fear, and reverence for His holiness. Uzzah touched the Ark of the Covenant. Nadab and Abihu offered strange fire before the Lord. The Corinthians took the Lord’s Supper in an unworthy manner.

I recently heard Perry Noble, a well known leader of a seeker sensitive megachurch, who has done such things as having his church’s band play AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” on Easter Sunday, say, “I’m willing to offend the church people to reach people for Jesus.” When asked where he drew the line at what was too offensive in church, he went on to say, “Iย probablyย wouldn’t have a stripper on stage…” and continued to justify using worldly and irreverent antics in church in order to “bring people to Jesus.”

But Perry has missed the point. Worship isn’t about people and what they like or don’t like. It isn’t about entertaining people and making sure they have some sort of enjoyable or emotional experience. It isn’t about attracting the attention of people.

Worship is aboutย God.

What doesย God think? How does He want to be worshiped?ย What doesย Heย find offensive?

God is not the God of “anything goes.” If you doubt that, go back to the Old Testament and read His precise instructions on constructing the tabernacle, offering sacrifices, the behavior and duties of priests and Levites, and so on. Anything goes? Far from it.

Christ should be the sun in our solar system of worship. Just as the sun’s gravity exerts just the right force on each planet, keeping them revolving around it in exactly the right path, so, when Christ is at the center of our worship, every song, every prayer, every word spoken will fall into exactly the right orbit around Him.

What about your church? The next time you attend a worship service, sit back and view it through the lens of discernment. Is it designed to make you happy? Comfortable? Entertained? Emotional? Or is every element of the service centered on Christ– His holiness, His sacrifice for sin, His love and grace — leading you to exalt Him and forget about yourself?

Pastors and worship leaders, one day you will answer to God for the way you led your church. Do you design worship services to attract and hold the attention of people, manipulate their emotions, and entertain them, or do you sit at your desk, pray, and consider what will please God, how you can best lift up the name of Christ, expose His glory, and keep things centered on Him? God has not called you to be a shock jock, stand up comedian, or motivational speaker. He has called you to preach Christ and Him crucified.

Let’s stop the silliness and stupidity, and repent. Worship is serious business.

Church, Parenting, Women

Yes Sir! That’s My Baby!

*Ladies, Iโ€™m about to address one of the most volatile, polarizing issues in the church today. Everybody, it seems, has an opinion โ€“ a strong opinionโ€”on this one. It has torn message boards apart, led to the giving and receiving of the evil eye across the pew, and caused rampant unfriending on Facebook. Dare I mention this topic that ignites such a flame within our collective bosom?

Well, after that build up, I guess Iโ€™d better.

Lemme brace myself.

And batten down the hatches.

And find something to take cover behind.

Umโ€ฆitโ€™s your baby.

funny_babies_faces_49

Well, maybe not yours in particular, but somebodyโ€™s. Somebodyโ€™s baby or small child is making a ruckus in church, and itโ€™s distracting everybody within earshot, including the pastor, who is making a valiant attempt to continue his train of thought even though heโ€™s not sure of his own name at the moment.

There. I said it, and I lived to tell the tale.  Whew.

Cute-Black-Babies_large

Now before you fire off an angry e-mail, let me backtrack for just a sec.  Titus 2:3-5 says that โ€œolder womenโ€ are to โ€œteach what is good and so train the young women.โ€ So, as much as it pains me at the age of almost 44, Iโ€™m going to put on my โ€œolder womanโ€ hat for just a minute, because I think thereโ€™s a teaching moment here for all of us. Yes, all of us, whether your best church dress (or capris) is freshly stained with strained peas or youโ€™ve graduated to dry clean only.

images

If youโ€™re a young mother, Iโ€™ve been where you are. I have six wonderful children in my family ranging in age from 25 all the way down to 9, and they have all been in church from day one. My husband has been a minister of music for most of our married life. We have served in churches with and without nurseries, childrenโ€™s church, cry rooms, and โ€œpiped inโ€ sermons. (โ€œWithโ€ was easier.) I know what itโ€™s like to try to wrangle one or two or three or more infants and small children during a sermon and keep them quiet. There were years when I got nothing out of the sermon for weeks on end because I was so busy trying to keep Baby from squalling his guts out and Junior from scribbling in the hymnal. Believe me, I sympathize. I get it.

Your baby is adorable. I donโ€™t even know what he looks like, but I know heโ€™s adorable. If heโ€™s within a ten foot radius of me, I will probably try to get my hands on him and cover him with kisses. I love babies and small children.

images (1)

I love that you want to have your children worship with you in church. Thatโ€™s where they belong! Iโ€™m excited that youโ€™ve chosen to raise them in church, and, having done so myself, appreciate the time and work it takes just to get to church clean, in one piece, and not hating each other (or at least two out of three!). And itโ€™s great to have them in โ€œbig churchโ€ where they can start getting their feet wet learning how to sit quietly through the service. I would never say that people shouldnโ€™t bring their munchkins into church.

So, please donโ€™t see me as some never-been-through-it-herself, baby-hating curmudgeon, but rather an older, wiser, been-there-done-that mommy when I say:

Sometimes your child makes noise. Too much noise.

And, as much as the people around you love your child, it bothers/annoys/irritates many of them when theyโ€™re trying to hear and participate in the worship service. And that doesnโ€™t make them bad people.

And itโ€™s distracting to the pastor/pray-er/speaker/musician whoโ€™s currently trying to carry out his part of the worship service. And that doesnโ€™t make him inept or unprofessional.

And it is your job as a parent โ€“just as it was mineโ€”to alleviate that situation, not the job of the people around you to ignore it.

funny_baby_picture_150

Most people are reasonable when it comes to a little distraction. They understand that Baby is going to fuss for the few seconds it takes you to find the pacifier he just dropped, lick the dirt off of it, and cram it back into his mouth. No big whoop. And if it is, well, those folks need to get a grip and show some understanding, or the next time they cough during the sermon, you have my permission to aim Baby over your shoulder in their general direction when heโ€™s of a mind to spit up. (Ok, ok. Not really. Thatโ€™s not a very Christlike attitude. Sorry.)

What most people find unreasonable is continuous, unabated noise from your child. Five minutes. Fifteen minutes. Thirty minutes. The entire worship service. And thatโ€™s not limited to fussing and crying. Happy babbling and talking is cute, but it can be just as loud and distracting as crying. And for someone whoโ€™s trying to focus on worship or the sermon, thatโ€™s not cute.

You need to take Baby out until you can get him quiet, and then you can bring him back in.

baby-meme-funny

Are you going to miss part of the service? Yes. Butโ€”and let me assure you, I say this to you in love โ€“toughen up, Buttercup. Thatโ€™s one of the things that happens when you become a parentโ€”you miss out on things you want to do. You probably donโ€™t get a full nightโ€™s sleep, trips to the bathroom by yourself, or uninterrupted conversations with other adults, either. Add this to the list. Yes, it can be discouraging, but cheer up! This, too, shall pass! Youโ€™re training your child, and it wonโ€™t be long before you will be able to sit through the whole service with him being quiet. Trust me, there are plenty of sermons on this side of Wailapalooza for you to enjoy with Junior coloring quietly at your side. You can make it!

One final aspect of this issue: church is not solely about you and your right to bring your children into the worship service (which, as Iโ€™ve said, no reasonable person who doesnโ€™t want to get spit up on would dispute) and keep them there whether they distract people or not. I know the vast majority of moms donโ€™t think this way, but for the tiny percentage that do, let me disabuse you of this idea right now.

Your role as a church member is not to demand your rights and have the rest of the congregation bend to them, whether youโ€™re a young mother, a pastor, a deacon, the head of a committee, or just Joe Church Member. That is a narcissistic, selfish, unChristlike attitude. Jesus Himself said,

โ€œFor even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.โ€ Mark 10:45

little_girl_with_Bible

Your role as a church member is to serve your brothers and sisters in Christ. So is mine. That means, if youโ€™re sitting near me, and I see you struggling with Baby or Junior during the service, I lean over and offer to help (Pleaseletmeholdyourbaby. Pleaseletmeholdyourbaby. Pleaseletmeholdyourbaby. :0) even if I end up missing part of the service. It also means that if your child is keeping the people around you from growing deeper in their walk with Christ because they canโ€™t hear and apply the sermon, or if heโ€™s throwing the pastor off from being able to deliver the sermon, you serve those people by taking your child out until heโ€™s quieted down.

If we all practice what Galatians 5:13 says, and โ€œserve one another in love,โ€ weโ€™ll have a phenomenal, loving, self-sacrificing church environment for Baby and Junior to grow up in. And that will benefit us all as the family of God.

baby-graphics-funny-445479

*(NOTE: I want to reassure my friends at my own church who are young mothers that this article was NOT inspired by you! We hardly ever hear a peep out of the babies and children who sit in our worship service because we have some fantastic young parents who are in tune with their childrenโ€™s and the rest of the congregationโ€™s needs, and they serve us both beautifully. These parents and their children are a joy and a delight, and my hat is off to them!)

I just think this is a fun song :0)

Discernment, Faith

The Perilous Parable of Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Tickle

mh900442249

Once upon a time, there was a college student who was majoring in engineering. Letโ€™s call her Brie. (Why? No particular reason except that Iโ€™m hungry and I happen to like cheese. But back to our story.)

One of the pre-requisite classes Brie had to take for her major was calculus. Brie had heard about the various calculus professors at her university. Some were tough. Some were boring. A few had a reputation for being easy.

MH900409045

Brie knew she did not want to take calculus from Dr. Shepherd. Although she had some friends who had taken his class and really seemed to know their stuff, calculaically speaking, they had told her that he demanded excellence of his students, had a no qualms about flunking students who werenโ€™t trying and didnโ€™t know the material, and gave regularโ€”and challengingโ€” homework and tests.

MH900386222

Brie was leaning more towards Dr. Tickle. Everybody said she was really nice and cared warmly for her students. She wasnโ€™t a stickler about deadlines for assignments, taught in a funny and entertaining way, and โ€“most importantly for Brieโ€”didnโ€™t believe in tests. Brie hated tests.

All of the sections of Dr. Tickleโ€™s classes usually filled up quickly, so Brie wasted no time registering, and, happily, secured a spot. She knew sheโ€™d made the right choice when, on the first day of class, Dr. Tickle started the lesson off with a one woman skit. She filled the rest of the class period with jokes and inspiring personal stories about her own days as an engineering major. No formulas. No notes. They didnโ€™t even crack the spines on their new text books. Brie felt completely at home and comfortable in Dr. Tickleโ€™s class.

About half way through the semester, Brie was regaling her friend, Tess, with a joke Dr. Tickle had told in class that day. Tess giggled at the punch line, but then her brow furrowed.

โ€œWow, youโ€™re really taking Dr. Tickle for calculus?โ€ Tess asked.

MH900442248

โ€œSure,โ€ replied Brie, โ€œI love her class. Why?โ€

โ€œWell, I took her calculus class for a few weeks. Dr. Tickle didnโ€™t really teach much actual math. And even when she did teach us a little bit about how to work some of the problems, I checked my notes against the book, and she had completely botched it. She had left out parts of the formulas, and some of the other things she taught us were the exact opposite of what the book said. If I had stayed in her class, I wouldnโ€™t have a clue as to whatโ€™s going on in the upper level classes Iโ€™m taking now. In fact, I probably wouldnโ€™t even be graduating. Iโ€™d really recommend that you drop Dr. Tickleโ€™s class and take calculus from a good professor who knows what heโ€™s doing. I took Dr. Shepherdโ€™s class. Heโ€™s tough, but heโ€™s a great teacher.โ€

โ€œWhat?!?! How can you say that about Dr. Tickle? I leave her class every day feeling great about calculus! Not once has she ever made me feel uncomfortable or stressed about my calculations. Sheโ€™s so understanding and kind, and I love the fun way she teaches. I thought you were my friend, Tess, and I thought you were a nice person, too. How could you say such mean things about Dr. Tickle?”

โ€œI am your friend, Brie! I want you to be able to understand calculus properly so youโ€™ll do well in the tougher classes that come later. I want to see you graduate with high marks and become a great engineer. Iโ€™m trying to help you!โ€

โ€œWell, I think Dr. Tickle is a great teacher, and I really enjoy her class,โ€ Brie responded coolly, โ€œWeโ€™ll just have to agree to disagree.โ€

There are Dr. Shepherds and Dr. Tickles on church campuses, too. God has not called pastors to stand in the pulpit and tickle your ears with jokes and stories. Nor has He called them to make the Bible and his sermons all about you and your self esteem, your dreams, your health, or your lust for material things. God has called pastors to:

preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 2 Timothy 4:2-5

If you have a Tess in your life who is warning you that a pastor, teacher, or author youโ€™re following is a false teacher, donโ€™t react like Brie did. What if your friend is right? Do you really want to follow a wolf in shepherdโ€™s clothing, or do you want to follow a Dr. Shepherd who will give you the truth of Godโ€™s word even if itโ€™s difficult? Check him out. Where? Faith, Prayer, Tragedy

How Now Shall We Pray?

525896_10152328212315442_1287922350_nLast week, an unspeakable tragedy happened. We all wish there were something we couldย doย to fix things and make things better for those who lost loved ones in Connecticut.

Well, there is something we can do. We can pray for them.

If you’re like me, your initial reaction is probably a feeling of, “That’s not enough. I need to do more.” Yes, it will be kind and compassionate to donate to the various funds that will be established, or to send a note of condolence. And if God moves you to do so, you absolutely should show His love in these ways. The families need to receive comfort and encouragement from God’s people, showing them God’s love.

But, if you think about it -especially if you’ve lost a loved one- you know that no act of kindness from a human being can bring the healing of the heart that these folks need. Theย onlyย way these families will experience true healing, peace, and comfort is through the direct intervention of the Man of Sorrows who is acquainted with grief. Weย cannot truly help them, butย Heย can.

So, how can we best pray for these heartbroken families?ย Pray that God will be glorified in this tragedy by:

1. Many coming to know Christ as Savior.
For some, a situation like this is a reminder of their own mortality and the eternity that will follow. Pray thatย people will bow the knee to Christ as the Holy Spirit woos their hearts, and be sensitive -wherever you happen to be located- to opportunities to share the gospel with people who are searching for answers in the wake of tragedy.

2. Bible-believing Christians and churches reaching out to the victims’ families with the love and comfort that can only be found in Christ. This is a time for the church to be the church and serve her neighbors.

3. God’s provision.
It’s likely that most of these families are not financially or logistically prepared to deal with the practical aspects of dealing with the death of a child or other family member. Pray that God will provide for the victims’ families and ease any struggles with “red tape” at this time. Here’s another area in which the church can serve them.

Please feel free to share this around. Let’s get as many people praying as possible.
