SoteriObamaGigliology and You

soteriobamagigliology

Is Louie Giglio a living martyr or a coward? What do you think of our shiny new state church here in the U.S.? If you havenโ€™t heard about The Giglio Imbroglio, allow me to bring you up to speed.gty_rev_louie_giglio_jef_130110_wblog

Pastor Louie Giglio was invited to say a prayer at President Obamaโ€™s inauguration ceremony later this month. Being a Christian pastor, it should have been expected that he would have preached at some point on what the Bible says about the sin of homosexuality. Someone with a pro-homosexuality group dug up a sermon ย from decades ago in which he had done just that, and, yada yada yada, Pastor Giglio โ€“ pressured, or not, by the Inaugural Committee (thatโ€™s a little murky at the moment)โ€” decided not to do the prayer. Ok, are ya with me? Good.

Iโ€™ve read a bit about this debacle over the past few daysย (though I have a few disagreements with some points, all of the articles hyperlinked above are excellent) and most of what I’ve read seems to be focused on Louie Giglio. But Louie Giglio isnโ€™t alone on the stage of this little drama.

Thereโ€™s another player. Our President.

Although all the details and communiquรฉs were being handled by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, as President Truman used to say, โ€œThe buck stops here.โ€ Right at the feet of President Obama. Ultimately, he is responsible for the โ€œunvitation.โ€ If he felt that the Committee was out of line in their statements or actions, he could have intervened. Instead, he has been silent, which implies consent.

Our President consented to the press release from the Inaugural Committee which said in part:

“As we now work to select someone to deliver the benediction, we will ensure their beliefs reflect this administration’s vision of inclusion and acceptance for all Americans.”

Translation: Louie Giglioโ€™s Christian beliefs about homosexuality, which come straight from the Bible, do not โ€œreflect this administrationโ€™s vision.โ€

Let me say that again. Christian beliefs about homosexuality, which line up with what the Bible clearly says, are opposed by our President.

Why is that important?

obama-in-church-2004-b654b48e648853dc_largeBecause our President believes he is a Christian.

And so do a lot of other people who share his beliefs on things like homosexuality and abortion.

If that describes you, before you get mad and stop reading, in fairness, hear me say something:

Sanctification (progressively becoming more and more Christlike) is a process. People who get saved, especially as an adult, bring a lot of entrenched opinions and thought processes with them to the cross.

Am I saying you have to become pro-life and anti-homosexuality (notice, I did not say anti-homosexual) before, or in order to, get saved?

No.

Am I saying that five minutes or a week after you get saved, youโ€™ll be pasting โ€œChoose Lifeโ€ and โ€œOne Man, One Womanโ€ bumper stickers on your car?

No.

What I am saying is that a person who has genuinely been born again has a God-created desire to know, trust, and obey Godโ€™s word.

Even if itโ€™s hard.

Even if you donโ€™t like it, initially.

Even if you donโ€™t completely understand it.

The desire, inextricably interwoven with your love and affection for Christ, born in your heart when you were born again, exists.

Therefore if anyone is inย Christ,ย he isย aย new creature; the old things passed away; behold,ย new things have come. II Corinthians 5:17

Do you have that desire?

Do you wrestle with the things in Godโ€™s word that are difficult for you โ€“perhaps things like homosexuality- in order to understand, embrace, and obey them?

Or, do you war against the things you find in the Bible that you donโ€™t like- rebelling against their inherent truth, rejecting them, twisting their meanings to suit your own opinions, and refusing to accept them?

If itโ€™s the latter, you need to be afraid.

Be VERY afraid.

Because the Bible makes it clear that you arenโ€™t saved.

By this we know that we have come toย know Him,ย if we keep His commandments.ย The one who says, โ€œI have come to know Him,โ€ and does not keep His commandments, is aย liar, and the truth is not in him;ย but whoeverย keeps His word, in him theย love of God has truly been perfected.ย By this we know that we are in Him:ย the one who says heย abides in Himย ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.ย I John 2:3-6

Butย aย natural manย does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they areย foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spirituallyย appraised.ย But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one.ย Forย who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? Butย we have the mind of Christ. ย I Corinthians 2:14-16

Youย adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world isย hostility toward God?ย Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. ย James 4:4

Christians desire to keep Godโ€™s word, just like Jesus did. Christians lovingly call sinners to repentance from their sin and to faith in Christ, just like Jesus did. Christians think like Jesus did. Christians reject the worldโ€™s values rather than promoting them, just like Jesus did.bible

My dear friend, if you find yourself constantly battling against Godโ€™s word, I urge you, please examine your affections and the fruit of your life, thoughts, and behavior in the mirror of Godโ€™s word. It doesnโ€™t matter if youโ€™ve repeated a prayer, filled out a card, been baptized, taken communion, faithfully attended church, served as a teacher, deacon, elder, or pastor, had someone assure you of your salvation, or even if you just โ€œfeel savedโ€. If your life and heart donโ€™t match up with what Scripture says is true of a Christian, you are not genuinely born again.

Please, turn away from your sin- all of your sin -and put your faith in Christโ€™s finished work on the cross, and in His bodily resurrection, as payment for that sin. If Cainย taught us anything, itโ€™s this: you canโ€™t come to God on your own terms. You have to approach Him on His terms.

Or, to borrow from a mantra oft repeated by some in the homosexual community:

If youโ€™re going to accept Him, you have to accept everything about Him.

How Now Shall We Pray?

525896_10152328212315442_1287922350_nLast week, an unspeakable tragedy happened. We all wish there were something we couldย doย to fix things and make things better for those who lost loved ones in Connecticut.

Well, there is something we can do. We can pray for them.

If you’re like me, your initial reaction is probably a feeling of, “That’s not enough. I need to do more.” Yes, it will be kind and compassionate to donate to the various funds that will be established, or to send a note of condolence. And if God moves you to do so, you absolutely should show His love in these ways. The families need to receive comfort and encouragement from God’s people, showing them God’s love.

But, if you think about it -especially if you’ve lost a loved one- you know that no act of kindness from a human being can bring the healing of the heart that these folks need. Theย onlyย way these families will experience true healing, peace, and comfort is through the direct intervention of the Man of Sorrows who is acquainted with grief. Weย cannot truly help them, butย Heย can.

So, how can we best pray for these heartbroken families?ย Pray that God will be glorified in this tragedy by:

1. Many coming to know Christ as Savior.
For some, a situation like this is a reminder of their own mortality and the eternity that will follow. Pray thatย people will bow the knee to Christ as the Holy Spirit woos their hearts, and be sensitive -wherever you happen to be located- to opportunities to share the gospel with people who are searching for answers in the wake of tragedy.

2. Bible-believing Christians and churches reaching out to the victims’ families with the love and comfort that can only be found in Christ. This is a time for the church to be the church and serve her neighbors.

3. God’s provision.
It’s likely that most of these families are not financially or logistically prepared to deal with the practical aspects of dealing with the death of a child or other family member. Pray that God will provide for the victims’ families and ease any struggles with “red tape” at this time. Here’s another area in which the church can serve them.

Please feel free to share this around. Let’s get as many people praying as possible.

Risque Business: Or, How an Adult Product Company Provided Some Very Interesting Content for my Blog

10900047_932153883492213_7491827866857274193_o

I received a hilarious e-mail today. Was it a video of a cute and bumbling puppy? No. A clever joke or anecdote? No. A funny political cartoon? No.

It was actually a piece of spam from an up and coming …shall we say… “adult” products company.

Normally, I would just roll my eyes that my spam filter didn’t catch it and simultaneously click delete, but due to the fact that there were no pictures in it nor a subject line that would raise a red flag, I didn’t realize what it was until I started reading it.

This company wasn’t trying to sell me one of their products, they wanted me toย reviewย one of their products.

On my blog.

Which sent me into hysterical fits of laughter.

The company wants to provide me “with the opportunity to write interesting content for [my] site.” And, “If this project goes smoothly,ย there are probably other ways we could work together as well.”

Do tell.

No, on second thought, don’t.

Sorry, my friend, I’ve already got the most interesting content on the planet for my site.

I’ve got a God-man who came to earth, lived for three decades without ever committing a single sin in thought, word, or behavior, turned water into wine, healed blind eyes, deaf ears, crippled limbs, and broken minds, fed tens of thousands of people from one plate of food, and spoke the wisest words that have ever been uttered.

And to top that all off, He willingly let His own community butcher him. Why? For billions of rebellious people who hate Him. So that He might set them free and rescue them from an excruciating eternity.

Oh, and then there’s that bit about Him coming back to life.

My reply to the spam e-mail I received was this:

I’m just curious, have you actually read my blog? Take a look and let me know whether you still think it’s a fit for your product: (web address)

I truly hope my e-mail makes it through and is actually read by someone. Because it turns out that “Brian” at the adult product company was right. Theyย didย give me the opportunity to write interesting content for my site: the Gospel.

And, Brian, if you want to discuss this interesting content more, get in touch and we’ll chat. I believe you have my e-mail address :0) “If this project goes smoothly,ย there are probably other ways we could work together as well.”

Welfare Check

“Why can’t You just give me this so I don’t have to ask anymore?”

I know.ย It sounds like a pretty spiritually immature thing to pray.ย But to be honest, I wasย weary ofย taking this ongoingย problem toย the Lord every time it reared its ugly head.ย Why couldn’tย He just fix it permanently so I didn’t have to deal with it anymore?

Becauseย I don’t like dealing with problems.ย They make me uncomfortable.ย I don’t like being uncomfortable.ย I’d ratherย God wouldย just make the problemsย go away and then everything would be blue skies and rainbows for me all the time.ย Just the way I like it.

Even the most liberal Liberal has heard a story or two about the welfare system that made him raise an eyebrow.ย As a radical, right-wing, uptight, Bible-thumping, evangelical Conservative, I’ll admit I’ve groused about the problems with the system a time or two.ย I think one of the things that tends to bother most people about some of the stories we hear is the sense of entitlement a few (certainlyย not all)ย welfare recipients can develop.ย It’s as though they are owed a nice lifestyle without having to lift a finger.ย They take what they receive for granted, and whatever they are given is never enough.ย They always want more.ย Nicer.ย Better.ย No gratitude, just gimme.

Hmmm…
That hits uncomfortably close to home.

You see, I’m living in God’s welfare system.

When was the last time I had to ask God for air to breathe?ย Or to make my heart beat?ย Or for clean water to drink, bathe, and do laundry in?ย Or food for my table?

When was the last time I even thought about the fact that I can think clearly enough to thank Him that I don’t have a psychiatric disorder or a brain injury?ย How often do I get down on my knees and praise God that I can getย back up again?ย I can walk.ย I can talk.ย I can see.ย I can hear.

God has blessed my family with six beautiful, healthy children, four of whom I was able to conceive, carry, and bear, relatively complication free.

I have a wonderful, godly husband and great father to my childrenย who isn’t a drug addict or a gambling addict,ย or an alcoholic, or a workaholic, or unfaithful or abusive to me.ย We liveย in a nice house, on a nice street, in a nice safe neighborhood.

God has blessed me with an extended family as well as a church family who both love me in spite of my numerous faults.ย He’s even given me the humbling honor of being able to serve Him in ministry.

But I always wantย more.ย Nicer.ย Better.ย No gratitude, just gimme.

Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:7-9ย that God gave him a thorn in the flesh to keep him from exalting himself.ย Frequently our focus in that passage is on speculating as to what, exactly,ย the “thorn” was.ย We fail to notice in the next verse that that thorn kept Paul coming back to the Lord, crying out to Him again and again.ย And that’s right where Paul needed toย be.

Sometimes that’s one of the purposes of our problems.ย God has blessed us with so many things we can forget we need Him. Until there’s a problem.ย And that problem can drive us back to crying out to Him in dependence in a way that no blessing ever could.

So maybe it’s time for a little welfare check:

1. Have you thanked God lately –really thanked Him- for all the blessings we tend to take for granted – food, clothing, freedom, a vehicle, etc.?ย Do youย live as thoughย God owes you these things?

2. In what ways do problems tend to drive you towards, or away from, God?

3.ย What does your prayer life look likeย when everything is going well in your life?ย When problems arise?ย How can you apply Philippians 4:6ย in your prayer life?

Back to the Basics, Part 1: Grab God’s Hand

mp900440954255b1255d

Every year at this time, there’s a lot of talk about New Year’s resolutions. The new year seems to bring with it a feeling of starting fresh, getting a do-over. I’ve never really been one for making resolutions, but this year, New Year’s coincided with some work God was doing in my life to give me a fresh start.

Sometimes we can get into a rut in our spiritual lives, a rut that’s too deep to just step out of by making a few minor adjustments. God has to reach down and pull us up and out of it. That’s where I was. Spiritually, I felt dry; as if God were in the other room, and I couldn’t quite find the door to get to Him. My Bible study and prayer time were shallow and hit-and-miss at best, and I was frustrated.

In answer to my crying out to Him, the Lord began to pull me up out of that rut. As He did, what He showed me was that I needed to get “back to the basics” in my spiritual life. This article is the first in a series exploring the basics God is leading me back to.

Grab God’s Hand

Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules.

2 Timothy 2:5

Looking back, I can see that one of the ways I got into my rut in the first place was some “stinkin’ thinkin'”. My spiritual life was just beginning to show some signs of dryness around the edges. I thought it was because I was doing my Bible study and prayer time out of habit every day rather than doing them because I felt a supernatural draw to them.

I decided that, rather than have my time with the Lord as a built in part of my every day schedule, I would ask God to give me a hunger for Him and his Word, and that when I felt that longing for Him, I would spend time with Him. I honestly did this with the best of intentions, because I felt myself slipping away from the Lord and wanted to be close to Him again.

Good intentions are a great thing, but if the action they inspire is wrong, the intention is worthless.

Good intentions are a great thing, but if the action they inspire is wrong, the intention is worthless. The action has to be the correct one. Mine was not. John Wesley said, “A fanatic is one who seeks desirable ends, but ignores constituted means.” “Constituted means” simply refers to the normal order of operations God has set up. For example, if I want a cake– a desirable end –I don’t hit my knees, ask God to send me a cake, and then go look in the oven to see if it’s there. I go to my cabinet, get out the ingredients, mix them up, and bake them. Those are God’s constituted means by which I can get cake.

It works the same way in our spiritual lives. Holiness, sanctification (spiritual growth), and hunger for the things of God aren’t three wishes magically granted by a genie, even if you call that genie “God”. You have to use God’s “constituted means” – the work of the Spirit and your obedience – to get there.

Holiness, sanctification, and hunger for the things of God aren’t three wishes magically granted by a genie. You have to use God’s “constituted means” – the work of the Spirit and your obedience – to get there

Paul describes our walk with the Lord as a race or athletic event. You don’t just rub a lamp, make a wish, and, BAM! you’re a great athlete. You get up every day and train and condition whether you feel like it or not. Some days, you’ll be excited about working out, other days, you’ll want to stay in bed, but regardless of how you feel, you still do it. It’s the “doing it” that creates the desire to hone your abilities more, and makes you love the sport more.

Likewise, we will never develop holiness and a closer walk with the Lord just by asking Him for them and then sitting and waiting. As we ask, we have to do the work of study and prayer– even when we don’t feel like it. It is in the “doing it” that God creates the hunger for more of Him. I discovered as I waited and waited for God to draw me close to His side that I was slipping farther and farther away from Him. I was trying to get to my desired end without using His constituted means.

So, when we’re down in that rut we can’t get out of, we should cry out to God to reach down and lift us out of it, but that’s not all. When God extends His hand to pull us out, we’ve got to reach up and grab hold of Him and hang on, even when we don’t feel like it. That’s called obedience, and Jesus said if we love Him, we’ll obey Him.

There are going to be some dry spells. After all, God didn’t talk to Moses from the burning bush every day, now did He? The answer is not to ask God to set the bush on fire, but to hang on to Him in faith when all we see in front of us is a charred pile of sticks.

The answer is not to ask God to set the bush on fire, but to hang on to Him in faith when all we see in front of us is a charred pile of sticks.

Keep walking, keep obeying, keep seeking Him. He has promised we’ll find Him.
