1 Corinthians 16

Now concerningย the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do.ย 2ย Onย the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up,ย as he may prosper,ย so that there will be no collecting when I come.ย 3ย And when I arrive, I will sendย those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem.ย 4ย If it seems advisable that I should go also, they will accompany me.

5ย I will visit you after passing throughย Macedonia, forย I intend to pass through Macedonia,ย 6ย and perhaps I will stay with you or even spend the winter, so that you mayย help me on my journey, wherever I go.7ย For I do not want to see you nowย just in passing. I hope to spend some time with you,ย if the Lord permits.ย 8ย But I will stay in Ephesus untilย Pentecost,ย 9ย forย a wide door for effective work has opened to me, andย there are many adversaries.

10ย When Timothy comes, see that you put him at ease among you, forย he is doingย the work of the Lord, as I am.ย 11ย Soย let no one despise him.ย Help him on his wayย in peace, that he may return to me, for I am expecting him with the brothers.

12ย Now concerningย our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to visit you with the other brothers, but it was not at all his willย to come now. He will come when he has opportunity.

13ย Be watchful,ย stand firm in the faith,ย act like men,ย be strong.ย 14ย Let all that you do be done in love.

15ย Now I urge you, brothersโ€”you know thatย the householdย of Stephanas wereย the first converts in Achaia, and that they have devoted themselvesย to the service of the saintsโ€”ย 16ย be subject to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer.ย 17ย I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus, because they have made up forย your absence,ย 18ย for theyย refreshed my spirit as well as yours.ย Give recognition to such people.

19ย The churches of Asia send you greetings.ย Aquila and Prisca, together withย the church in their house, send you hearty greetings in the Lord.ย 20ย All the brothers send you greetings.ย Greet one another with a holy kiss.

21ย I, Paul, writeย this greeting with my own hand.ย 22ย If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him beย accursed. Our Lord, come!ย 23ย The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.ย 24ย My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Questions to Consider:

1. What is Paul’s goal in writing this chapter?

2. What can we learn about giving and collecting offerings from verses 1-3?

3. What example can we take from verses 10-11 about how we should treat our pastors?

4. What five things does Paul tell the men of the church to do in verses 13-14? Think of one way you could carry out each of these instructions in your church.

5. In verse 20, Paul instructs the members to “greet one another with a holy kiss,” a culturally appropriate sign of respect and affection at the time. Why is it important to have and show respect and affection for our church family?
