Lamentations 3
I am the man who has seen affliction
ย ย ย ย under the rod of his wrath;
2ย he has driven and brought me
ย ย ย ย into darkness without any light;
3ย surely against me he turns his hand
ย ย ย ย again and again the whole day long.
4ย He has made my flesh and my skin waste away;
ย ย ย ย he has broken my bones;
5ย he has besieged and enveloped me
ย ย ย ย with bitterness and tribulation;
6ย he has made me dwell in darkness
ย ย ย ย like the dead of long ago.
7ย He has walled me about so that I cannot escape;
ย ย ย ย he has made my chains heavy;
8ย though I call and cry for help,
ย ย ย ย he shuts out my prayer;
9ย he has blocked my ways with blocks of stones;
ย ย ย ย he has made my paths crooked.
10ย He is a bear lying in wait for me,
ย ย ย ย a lion in hiding;
11ย he turned aside my steps and tore me to pieces;
ย ย ย ย he has made me desolate;
12ย he bent his bow and set me
ย ย ย ย as a target for his arrow.
13ย He drove into my kidneys
ย ย ย ย the arrows of his quiver;
14ย I have become the laughingstock of all peoples,
ย ย ย ย the object of their taunts all day long.
15ย He has filled me with bitterness;
ย ย ย ย he has sated me with wormwood.
16ย He has made my teeth grind on gravel,
ย ย ย ย and made me cower in ashes;
17ย my soul is bereft of peace;
ย ย ย ย I have forgotten what happiness is;
18ย so I say, โMy endurance has perished;
ย ย ย ย so has my hope from the Lord.โ
19ย Remember my affliction and my wanderings,
ย ย ย ย the wormwood and the gall!
20ย My soul continually remembers it
ย ย ย ย and is bowed down within me.
21ย But this I call to mind,
ย ย ย ย and therefore I have hope:
22ย The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
ย ย ย ย his mercies never come to an end;
23ย they are new every morning;
ย ย ย ย great is your faithfulness.
24ย โThe Lord is my portion,โ says my soul,
ย ย ย ย โtherefore I will hope in him.โ
25ย The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
ย ย ย ย to the soul who seeks him.
26ย It is good that one should wait quietly
ย ย ย ย for the salvation of the Lord.
27ย It is good for a man that he bear
ย ย ย ย the yoke in his youth.
28ย Let him sit alone in silence
ย ย ย ย when it is laid on him;
29ย let him put his mouth in the dustโ
ย ย ย ย there may yet be hope;
30ย let him give his cheek to the one who strikes,
ย ย ย ย and let him be filled with insults.
31ย For the Lord will not
ย ย ย ย cast off forever,
32ย but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion
ย ย ย ย according to the abundance of his steadfast love;
33ย for he does not afflict from his heart
ย ย ย ย or grieve the children of men.
34ย To crush underfoot
ย ย ย ย all the prisoners of the earth,
35ย to deny a man justice
ย ย ย ย in the presence of the Most High,
36ย to subvert a man in his lawsuit,
ย ย ย ย the Lord does not approve.
37ย Who has spoken and it came to pass,
ย ย ย ย unless the Lord has commanded it?
38ย Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
ย ย ย ย that good and bad come?
39ย Why should a living man complain,
ย ย ย ย a man, about the punishment of his sins?
40ย Let us test and examine our ways,
ย ย ย ย and return to the Lord!
41ย Let us lift up our hearts and hands
ย ย ย ย to God in heaven:
42ย โWe have transgressed and rebelled,
ย ย ย ย and you have not forgiven.
43ย โYou have wrapped yourself with anger and pursued us,
ย ย ย ย killing without pity;
44ย you have wrapped yourself with a cloud
ย ย ย ย so that no prayer can pass through.
45ย You have made us scum and garbage
ย ย ย ย among the peoples.
46ย โAll our enemies
ย ย ย ย open their mouths against us;
47ย panic and pitfall have come upon us,
ย ย ย ย devastation and destruction;
48ย my eyes flow with rivers of tears
ย ย ย ย because of the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49ย โMy eyes will flow without ceasing,
ย ย ย ย without respite,
50ย until the Lord from heaven
ย ย ย ย looks down and sees;
51ย my eyes cause me grief
ย ย ย ย at the fate of all the daughters of my city.
52ย โI have been hunted like a bird
ย ย ย ย by those who were my enemies without cause;
53ย they flung me alive into the pit
ย ย ย ย and cast stones on me;
54ย water closed over my head;
ย ย ย ย I said, โI am lost.โ
55ย โI called on your name, O Lord,
ย ย ย ย from the depths of the pit;
56ย you heard my plea, โDo not close
ย ย ย ย your ear to my cry for help!โ
57ย You came near when I called on you;
ย ย ย ย you said, โDo not fear!โ
58ย โYou have taken up my cause, O Lord;
ย ย ย ย you have redeemed my life.
59ย You have seen the wrong done to me, O Lord;
ย ย ย ย judge my cause.
60ย You have seen all their vengeance,
ย ย ย ย all their plots against me.
61ย โYou have heard their taunts, O Lord,
ย ย ย ย all their plots against me.
62ย The lips and thoughts of my assailants
ย ย ย ย are against me all the day long.
63ย Behold their sitting and their rising;
ย ย ย ย I am the object of their taunts.
64ย โYou will repay them, O Lord,
ย ย ย ย according to the work of their hands.
65ย You will give them dullness of heart;
ย ย ย ย your curse will be on them.
66ย You will pursue them in anger and destroy them
ย ย ย ย from under your heavens, O Lord.โ

Questions to Consider:
1. Who is thought to have writtenย Lamentations? What major historical event is being lamented in this book? Why did God allow this event to happen? Which of God’s attributes (mercy, provision, wrath, forgiveness, etc.) does this event showcase?
2.ย Sometimes our feelings can obscure what we know to be true of God from His word. Consider the phrases, “He shuts out my prayer,” (8) and “my hope from the Lord [has perished]” (18). What are some verses that can bring comfort if we ever feel this way? Which is truth, our feelings or God’s word? Which should we believe? Which should we act upon? If our feelings contradict God’s word, which can we depend upon to be correct?
3. Carefully examine verse 21. This is a transitional verse in which the writer moves from hopelessness and grief to _________.ย Howย does he make the transition? What does he “call to mind”? How does he know the things in the subsequent verses?
4. What are some of the attributes of God the writer describes in verses 22-66? Which one does he seem to focus most on?
5. What do verses 39-44 teach us about the relationship between repentance and prayer, God’s wrath, and forgiveness?
