Wednesday’s Word ~ Ephesians 3

eph 3 21

Ephesians 3

For this reason I, Paul,ย a prisoner for Christ Jesusย on behalf of you Gentilesโ€”ย 2ย assuming that you have heard ofย the stewardship ofย God’s grace that was given to me for you,ย 3ย how the mystery was made known to meย by revelation,ย as I have written briefly.ย 4ย When you read this, you can perceive my insight intoย the mystery of Christ,ย 5ย which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.ย 6ย This mystery isย that the Gentiles areย fellow heirs,ย members of the same body, andย partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

7ย Of this gospel I was madeย a minister according to the gift ofย God’s grace, which was given meย by the working of his power.ย 8ย To me,ย though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given,ย to preach to the Gentiles theย unsearchableย riches of Christ,ย 9ย andย to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mysteryย hidden for ages inย Godย who created all things,ย 10ย so that through the church the manifoldย wisdom of Godย might now be made known toย the rulers and authoritiesย in the heavenly places.ย 11ย This wasย according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,ย 12ย in whom we haveย boldness andย access withย confidence through ourย faith in him.ย 13ย So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am sufferingย for you,ย which is your glory.

14ย For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,ย 15ย from whomย every familyย in heaven and on earth is named,ย 16ย that according toย the riches of his gloryย he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spiritย in your inner being,ย 17ย so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faithโ€”that you, beingย rooted andย grounded in love,ย 18ย may have strength toย comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length andย height and depth,ย 19ย and to know the love of Christย that surpasses knowledge, thatย you may be filled with allย the fullness of God.

20ย Now toย him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think,ย according to the power at work within us,ย 21ย to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen

Questions to Consider:

1. Where would you have to look to find what “this reason” in verse 1 is? What is the reason Paul is writing his letter to the Ephesian churches?

2. According to verse 6, what is the “mystery” Paul refers to in verses 1-6? Also in verse 6, who are the Gentiles “fellow heirs” and the “same body” with? What promise is Paul talking about, and who fulfilled this promise?

3. How does Paul describe what God called him to do? (8-10) Who are the “rulers and authorities in heavenly places” (10), and what is revealed to them about God through the church?

4. What is “this reason” in verse 14? What are some of the things Paul desires for the Ephesian Christians to have in verses 14-19?

5. What is the primary way God is glorified in the church (21), and what are some secondary ways your church can intentionally bring glory to God?
