Hebrews 10

For since the law has butย a shadowย of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities,ย it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.ย 2ย Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?ย 3ย Butย in these sacrificesย there is a reminder of sins every year.ย 4ย Forย it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5ย Consequently,ย when Christย came into the world, he said,

โ€œSacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
ย ย ย ย but a body have you prepared for me;
6ย in burnt offerings and sin offerings
ย ย ย ย you have taken no pleasure.
7ย Then I said, โ€˜Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
ย ย ย ย as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.โ€™โ€

8ย When he said above, โ€œYou have neither desired nor taken pleasure inย sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offeringsโ€ (these are offered according to the law),ย 9ย then he added,ย โ€œBehold, I have come to do your will.โ€ He does away with the first in order to establish the second.ย 10ย And by that willย we have been sanctified through the offering ofย the body of Jesus Christย once for all.

11ย And every priest standsย daily at his service,ย offering repeatedly the same sacrifices,ย which can never take away sins.ย 12ย But when Christย had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, heย sat down at the right hand of God,ย 13ย waiting from that timeย until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.14ย For by a single offeringย he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15ย And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16ย โ€œThis is the covenant that I will make with them
ย ย ย ย after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
ย ย ย ย and write them on their minds,โ€

17ย then he adds,

โ€œI will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.โ€

18ย Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

19ย Therefore, brothers,ย since we have confidence to enterย the holy places by the blood of Jesus,ย 20ย byย the new and living way that he opened for us throughย the curtain, that is, through his flesh,ย 21ย and since we haveย a great priest over the house of God,ย 22ย let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our heartsย sprinkled cleanย from an evil conscience and our bodiesย washed with pure water.ย 23ย Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, forย he who promised is faithful.ย 24ย Andย let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,ย 25ย not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, andย all the more as you seeย the Day drawing near.

26ย Forย if we go on sinning deliberatelyย after receiving the knowledge of the truth,ย there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,ย 27ย but a fearful expectation of judgment, andย a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.ย 28ย Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercyย on the evidence of two or three witnesses.ย 29ย How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the oneย who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profanedย the blood of the covenantย by which he was sanctified, and hasย outraged the Spirit of grace?ย 30ย For we know him who said,ย โ€œVengeance is mine; I will repay.โ€ And again,ย โ€œThe Lord will judge his people.โ€ย 31ย It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

32ย But recall the former days when, afterย you were enlightened, you enduredย a hard struggle with sufferings,ย 33ย sometimes beingย publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.ย 34ย Forย you had compassion on those in prison, andย you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves hadย a better possession and an abiding one.ย 35ย Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which hasย a great reward.ย 36ย Forย you have need of endurance, so thatย when you have done the will of God you mayย receive what is promised.ย 37ย For,

โ€œYet a little while,
ย ย ย ย andย the coming one will come and will not delay;
38ย but my righteous one shall live by faith,
ย ย ย ย and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.โ€

39ย But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

Questions to Consider:

1. What is the overall theme of Hebrews 10?

2. What are the “good things to come” (v.1) that were foreshadowed by the law?

3.ย Why, according to verses 11-14, 18, do priests no longer need to make sacrifices for sin?

4. According to verses 19-22, how may we now approach God, and why are we allowed to approach Him this way?

5. What reason, as described in verses 26-30, would someone have to fear falling into the hands of the living God (v.31)?
